Port St. Joe - Old St. Joseph and Archaeology Presentation by Chris Hunt

Details

Old St. Joseph and Archaeology Presentation by Chris Hunt. The town of St. Joseph, established in 1835, served as an important deep-water port for receiving and shipping dry goods up the Apalachicola River north along the vast network of navigable inland waterways in southeastern U.S. during the early nineteenth century. Recently a large artifact collection from St. Joseph was made available for professional research. The collector invited me to document the materials and do the first archaeological investigation of this lost town. This research also utilizes the material culture to examine questions of early nineteenth-century.

Friday Lunch and Learn: Bring your lunch or a snack (we’ll provide the tea) and settle in for the POV documentary Tea Time by Maite Alberdi Soto. Ritual is often associated with powerful and impersonal institutions, but for five Chilean women, ritual centers on a monthly gathering that has sustained them through 60 years of personal and societal change. Tea Time is a charming and poignant look at how a seemingly mundane routine of tea and pastries has helped the well-heeled participants commemorate life's joys and challenges.  This event is a collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV (www.pbs.org/pov).

Port St. Joe - Food is more than the stuff of life; it is an important part of our heritage and culture that defines us as a people.

Details

Phone:(850) 229-8879

Food is more than the stuff of life; it is an important part of our heritage and culture that defines us as a people. How do we know what we know about food in colonial Florida? Cathy Parker demonstrates for her audience how information from the written historical record, together with evidence from the archaeological record, has answered this question time after time—giving us a more complete picture, for example, of early life in la Florida. She shows that careful comparison of archaeological evidence—in the form of bones, shells, and burned seeds; with appropriate documentary evidence—in the form of letters, inventories, requisitions, and church records—is very much like solving a mystery or a puzzle. Handouts with recipes will be provided, and questions are encouraged.
